Project Description

Improving the quality of life of inmates in the Buea Central Prison, South West Region Cameroon.

In December of the year 2017, New Visualization organized a two weeks follow up programme on her maiden grand project Strengthening Community Participation in Prisoners Rehabilitation in the Buea Central Prison with objectives:

  • To evaluate inmates cognitive behavior pertaining to social cohesion
  • To improve the medical, physical and psychological health of inmates particularly, the females, minors, disabled and elderly.
  • To improve the moral capacities and spiritual consciousness of inmates
  • To enhance inmates social capital and stimulate social cohesion

It was observed that inmates’ willingness to participate in reformative activities had increased after the maiden project executed by New Visualization as the turn out for the follow up programme registered an increase in participation. Fairly similar activities were carried out as with the maiden project and they recorded an increase in participation correspondingly.

  • Games

This time around the number of football teams had increased from 4 to 8 teams viz: Vista club Tiko United, Mount Kupe, City Angels, Kumba Lakers, Social Club, Black Dalia and Red Devils and inmates became more enthusiastic as fan clubs of each team were animating humorously during the football matches.

  • Chaplaincy: Here also, inmates became more involved in the ecumenical services.
  • Counseling: Counseling sessions witnessed a tremendous increase from a little over 303 in the maiden project to well over 865 inmates in the follow up project. Inmates had become more open to disclose their Challenges and seek help.
  • Treatment for skin infections: here the numbers stayed fairly the same from 793 in the maiden project to 678 in the follow up barely 3 month later. This was due to increased awareness and concerns of inmates to about their health.

  • Debates and Quizzes: As the numbers increased additional activities were developed to keep inmates engaged. Debate teams were organized for inmates to engage on an intellectual capacity. Impromptu quizzes were also organized. For the debate and quiz exercises, topics and questions were based on the view of the prison as an extension to society and social propriety respectively.

  • Gifts: Prisoners are in constant lack of basic amenities. New Visualization has taken up a mandate to try and provide such to inmates who cannot afford them especially item used for personal hygiene and food stuffs.
